Groovy Compo | Results | GC28
Organized by: Yannis Brown GroovyCompo #28 Results
This competition was run over 3 or 4 weeks.. I can’t even remember. I ended up forgetting to bring my HD with me to Adelaide when I went back home for Christmas so I didn’t have all the tunes to compose a vote pack . so this competition finished on the 9th of Jan1999 giving contestants more than enough time to write something. Only 3 people didn’t vote which is quite good considering the 29 entries. Well done to all the entrants.
NOTE: There were also a few songs over the limit, some up to the size of 250k zipped. As this competition is already running behind, and I hadn’t checked these tunes before getting the vote pack up like I normally do. I won’t disqualify them this time. However, please remember to keep the files within the size limit (200k ZIPPED maximum) otherwise the vote pack starts to get huge! In the future entries which aren’t in the size limit will not even be included in the vote pack, so you will have wasted your time writing it.

- Excellent work; expressive leads, good transitions, nice melody, clean use of samples. Great bass work & percussion. Ballistique makes it seem easy to take a simple melody and create a very listenable tune with it. I especially like the way he porta’s the bass down right before cutting them off. Adds nice meat to the tune!
- : Ballistique really knows what he’s doing. Everything fits very well, it’s a joy to listen to.
- hmm. best song in the bunch. shows talent in using a tracker and w/ making music in general. had that nice democheese chord progression that goes over so well in compos
..wasnt that cheesy mind you, just a good all around tune.
- Ballistique’s tune deserves the highest rating of this compo because it has an overall good quality in all aspects, drums, bass, chords, lead, technical stuff and feel. Nico’s tune was quite close, but in the end I decided to rate as_dtd.it higher, because I simply enjoyed it more
- I think the biggest problem with this GC’s songs was excessive repitition and lack of originality. Dusk Till Dawn, although it also slightly falls into the repetition trap, stays interesting with the use of very nice variations. The background arpeggios and the flute give the song a sense of a person at rest in the midst of nature (or something). The other side of the the song, which is more of an electronical sound, fits in with the arpeggios in a very interesting manner. The start of the song is made up of a central tune which gradually builds up in volume with the adding of other instruments. The change in the middle of the first half is very well recieved. The pause in the middle of the song, which restarts like the beginning of the song but with the flute tune changed to wow synth is also appropriate. The brass chords at the middle of the first half are perhaps a little too over-the-top, but then again it is a question of taste. All in all, very well done.
- shrug.. not that it is an amazing track or anything, but it has a verrry nice little tune
- The ones with 18 or higher I thought were composed well. I especially liked ‘as_dtd.it’. It has a nice lead and good chord progression. Overall the song sounded better than the other tracks. I was really rushed for this voting as well so I can’t make it as in-depth as I’d like to.
- Amazing orchestration and leads…strong drums, and damn cool background support…one of the best all around tunes of the compo.
- bal pulled out something very nice, with a strong melody and excellent tracking skill. to produce a good song you need technique, musical ability and a bit of imagination, and this song was the one that showed, if not a huge amount of originality, at least plenty of the first two. the song wasn’t immensely complex musically, but it was competant. what really worked was the quality of the arangement and orchestration, with nice layering of sounds and good technical skill throughout. it was also quite catchy, i think.
- this was the most melodic tune of the bunch so i chose it first ..aslo the technich was very good
- I scored AS-DTD highest because it establishes a good, solid chord sequence right from the start, which is used most of the way through the piece, giving the song a strong sense of stability. Although the main theme is not very complex, it is easy to listen to and uses a wide range of the instruments available in the pack. The minor sequence is original and brings out a change in mood of the piece. Overall, the song has good texture and a wide timbre. Out of all of the songs entred I listened to this one the most, since it is the nicest to listen to.
- At the beggining ballistique tune was the one I liked the most, but when I listened to wayfinder one I get out of me
I enjoyed a lot the melow leads and the chords progression, very good in the overall! Congratulations once again!
- wonderfully balstyle. very catchy melodies, good build, and very nice bass. cheered me up when i heard it. sounds the most solid and professional. very very nice.

- Well done! Starts with a typical fill-in-the-channel intro. 30 seconds through a very well done “tension” riff is created that smoothly leads into the (if too “familiar” for my taste) chorus, sounding somewhat like 80’s music or even disco (I hope it’s original =). Afterwards a flute follows the chords somewhat blandly, but works. The synth then comes in and leads into a solo. While the solo is decent, it’s mixed too loud. Then a *very good* mysterious riff comes in, leading back into the great chorus. The guitar afterwards could have been done better (too repetitive, and a little redundant). But the chords are well voiced, and good technique is used. By now the loud snare gets annoying (everything else is so quiet). The freestyle solo (sounds a little ?Russian? =) is repeated, but not to great effect due to the mixing. The ending rushes upon you unprepared and leaves you hanging with a “huh? whatever…” feeling. Unless you did this at the last minute, that’s inexcusable =) I look forward to your next song, but I ask that you pay more attention to detail, form, and especially mixing (maybe get better speakers?), particularly in your bridges and intro. Definetely a close contest, but this song kept luring me back.
file: kyp-mexi.it
- Okay, Kyp’s track was awesome, plain and simple. It was hard to switch over to this points thing, cause there were so many tracks. I liked most of them, but there has to be only one winner. It has some awesome lead parts and the staccato(sp?) bass line rules. Good job Kyp!
file: brown.xm
- The drums are boring, but the bassline is very good. The synth is well used too.
- Of all the jazzy tunes, Brown Haired Girl was the best. It was well tracked, fun to listen to, and made good use of musical and tracking effects. Well done
- I have brown.xm as winner because it’s catchy and sounds really professional. I especially liked the bass a lot, and also the solo that comes after around 30 secs. I also really like the the little trumpet sounds that links the patterns/breaks. It could have been a bit longer though, and maybe returned to it’s initial theme, but still a very nice tune!
- starts out with a really good groove. The melody fits and the bass pretty good. I really like the style this piece is in. As_dtd.it and waygc28.it also got a high score from me because they were pretty good and nicely tracked; waygc28.it did require to many channels, though.
- Shit this was a hard pack to vote. I chose the winner coz I liked the tune, can’t say anything more than that
file: ltingrvs.it
- The name fits…
Anyway, it has a very interesting lead which I liked very much, but I must mention some details. Some very confusing transitions disturbed me. And gee… In IT press F4. Now press the right arrow three times followed by “enter”. See? That wasn’t so hard, eh?
file: so_aymes.it
- Well used guitars. A bit repetitive, but a beautiful song overall.
- i chose sophistry for my first place mostly because of the main guitar part. it had a really catchy melody and the echoes on it were great. i also like how unlike most of the other tracks in the pack, it wasnt dependant on drums. the leads just added to the feeling of the song to create a nice atmosphere…its just an all around good song.
- It’s mellow man! After a day at gunnery school it chills me out.
file: smeg_nea.it
- It’s quite quick, and the song has a good lead. The only “bad” thing about it is it’s very confusing hard-to-follow-correctly bass solo.
file: waygc28.it
- i like melody based music with cordbased background.Panning is nicely placed with well use of the instruments. A little to short…but what can u do in 200kb…Overall a good tune. (And i agree,Demopop sure rules
- Sweet tune…good leads…decent drums…good orchestration and structure. Great all around tune and great as a dedication. ;>
file: zenith.it
- a handfull of “winners” this time, zenith beating a couple of other ones by just a point. Really cool, chilling and progressive tune. This is how a sinesample should be used. Almost awesome; very,VERY groovy at least.
- zephyr’s mellow groove and subtle drum and bass lines along with the orchestration (and the orbital influences
make this tune worthy of a top score.
file: cigardd.xm
- Nice diskotune witch kick ass when realy starts.
file: product7.it
- Oh, product 7? Yeah. Cool tune. Nice house style, nice 303-ish synths (that’s how they sound like to me), sounds like something made in ReBirth to me actually. It’s pretty good…. Yannis, if you only added a clap
Oh yeah, he didn’t add an extra sample, right? Johan you should’ve added a clap, I believe it’s going to sound a lot better… the snares sound so “artificial.” (I even played my song (Silent Fear – silfear.it) on my stereo, and the snare drum sounds like… sh*t! Anyways, this is really one nice
Comments On Last Place:
file: silfear.it
- I gave silfear.it a 4, and i think a lot of people will vote a low score on that song aswell. I feel I should explain why this will happen: REPETITION. After the first minute i was bored out of my skull. You have to try and keep your songs interesting. Don’t get discouraged now. I gave indigo.it a low mark because I have defenitely heard that song somewhere. It is just too unoriginal, and also too straightforward musically. You should try and make your own stuff man, don’t get discouraged though.
