Groovy Compo | Results | GC35
Organized by: Yannis Brown GroovyCompo #35 Results
Groovy Comp 35 had a great sample pack with varying instruments to create any style the author wished. Congratulations to norfair for creating a wonderul piece for this comp. His tune was both jazzy and electronica rolled into one. Some very good entries this time which is of course always good to see. Yes, I did enter myself, however, I only decided to on the second to last day before it was due. I’ve been quite busy lately organising my life and going overseas to work.
It’s a pity to have to disqualify a few tunes this time because of no voting, and of course Garlik with an external sample > 64k … tsk tsk.. read the rules buddy.

- Nice tight drums combined with a fluid layer of instruments blended into a nice chunky groove. This is a tune which sounds so simple, but I can see quite a bit of work has gone into writing it and that shows. The jazz work is admireable and the chord sequences aren’t cheesy and sometimes don’t quite click, but it doesn’t sound out of place.
- Half the tunes in this pack were average, typical tracks, but the rest were definitely above. On one side, you have the musically keen tunes like Aymes’ “Inside The Atom” and Yannis’ aptly named “YBGC35″. Then you have really professional-sounding tracks like Zephyr’s “Jemima’s Meth” and Ballistique/Argh’s “The Outlaw”. But above the rest, you have Norfair’s “Paranoid High”, which pretty much encompasses both sides here. EXCELLENT job, Norfair. :>
- Nice piece of work. Funky bass, nice ambiance and nice jazz sound. Put togetherwell, nice to listen too.. just needed a little work on mixing. Got overamped a little in spots. Best musically and most well tracked.
- Norfair’s song was a cut above the rest this time. Great bassline, great beats, very groovy.
- An excellent ambient tune. It flowed beautifully with excellent bassline and lead work. Created the feeling of paranoia in a very convincing way by using chirpy leads and fluffy chords whilst underneath a dark bass lurked. Got a little repedative in parts as it needed more contrasting sections. However overall a great tune and one worthy of my top vote.

- Difficult to choose between this tune and norfair´s one! In the end I decided this was the best, great melow and ambient! Really great! Congrats zephyr
- Most of the entrants had some groovy toons and a pretty decent beat, so scoring wasn’t that easy. Picking the best, however, wasn’t too hard either! This song was well organised, clean and fluid, and aesthetically pleasing to the ear, with a hint of oldskool. Tracking style was also appealing as Zephyr used volume, panning, FX, etc. pretty neatly and hence got a clean sounding tune! Using filtering may not have been such a good idea but who cares, nearly everyone’s got an MMX nowadays anyway! The song was, however, way too long and the 2nd bit was pointless and sounded pretty bad anyway! Oh well, I didn’t care, it still pretty much rocked! On another day, tho, I might’ve picked Future Shock. If Inside the atom was a little more fluid and maybe a little cleaner instrument-wise, it woulda won for sure! Oh well, maybe next time Aymes… -Kb-
- The tune is excellent, professional sounding, nice everything. This song goes down well. R-O-X.

- sheesh, you’d think yannis wouldn’t win his own compo, but i can’t help but nominate his tune as best in the pack. exhibiting a tight melodious style that hasn’t been rivaled by any of the other entrants, this tune brings me back to the height of the oldschool tracking scene, where much genius talent was funneled through very young technology. it’s very difficult to create characteristically human-sounding music in this medium, and yannis proves that a simple groove can break through the robotic confines of tracked musak. this one’s definately a keeper! my faith in the scene has been somewhat restored!

- Super-funky bassline! The mood this module sets is just awesome! Has an arabian feel to it. The lead is very well-tracked and has a cool effect. The ending is not that great though, it feels a bit unfinnished.

- I real like the panning position for the snare, and also the use of the “double hit” snare. However, the best part of the song is at the end of pattern 11, where the last severn chords are played by the sine instead. The polyphonic middle section was pretty good too. A great song overall!
- VERY nice melodies with the kind of Organ sample, and excellent drums
- what can I say? I like the percussion in the intro, and once the melody kicks in it’s great. I feel the flow of the piece works really well. Some of the parts later in the song were pure excellence. Just about made me cream my pants.

- I think this was a great compo, and i had a hard time to select the proper ratings for the tunes.But i decided to give this the highest mostly because i just likes to listen to the ambient-bas-sound-melody. I always give the winning position to the tune i like to listen to the most. Not the one with the most advanced tracking skills or the one with most time spent on.I hope to se u all next time i enter. =}
