These people are disqualified for not
voting. Ballistique, Xenon, Chaos303. Ballistique voted, but he didn't use the voteform,
which is stated in the rules. I didn't disqualify his co-op because I feel bad enough
d/q'ing him.
GC3 Comments
Hands down, Yannis has again proven to pull
together an impressive, strong sound that hits as hard as a L.A. cop. Its piercing leads
carry you on a whimsical wind while the undertow of the bouncing bass and percussion hold
the tempo in check. While B&A-PIER.IT was a well-done welcome change of style, and
INJ.XM rode high on an electric groove, YBGC03.IT stuck out from the crowd with synths
working in harmony and a string section that stepped up when the lead's sharp edge
retracted. MR_SURV.IT put forth good effort but relied too much on the pizzacato. The only
complaint I find is the repetition of pats 40-43 as the electric solo fades out---it
should have just been an all-out freakish solo.
i put paso's tune on 1'st mainly because i
think it was clearly the best song here . he managed to get something cool in his song.
And i think it was pretty good tracked too. I think that protcol's module was good .. a
nice mood over the whole song .. but it diden't come up close to paso's tune. Otherwise i
was realy disapointed in guys like mick rippon and beek , you guys have made such good
music the other times .. why did you blow it now ? And i think that axl and fthr's tune
was the most original and funny tune ;D
Arrival was the best overall tune, because it
made an impression on me that wasn't disturbed by anything. Flowers.xm and Inj.xm both
rock like hell, but there were some little flaws in them (like using the Wow sound as
lead) which kept me from voting *them* first. I especially like the fading chords of
Arrival and (wise choice off add-on sample btw.) the piano. Dreamy stuff, one of my
favourite GC tunes (including Compos 1-3).
Well, it starts off with a good lead with nice
chords, and moves into a very mellow song with a good beat. There are good transitions- it
never suddenly switches from one idea to another. The overall style is one that I like, as
well, and it kept my interest throughout. The melody (the chords) are very good, and the
mood of the song is easy to tell- it's a very mellow-happy sort of song. The ending is
good- it doesn't abruptly end or suddenly stop, but fades out, as a good song should. When
I heard it, it immediately stood out in my mind as a good song.
Yannis' song was placed first because it was
well tracked overall. The leads were nice and very moving, and the mixing was good. The
only thing that I did not really like about the song was the 20 order fade out at the end.
Otherwise, solidly tracked.
Again a hell of a time spent in this compo
judging it, again more better work from a lot of musicians and more original entries than
the last time, "Train of Thoughts" (pro-trot.it) deserves most attention to win,
not only because of it's diversity but also it originality or more improved version to the
simular 4-channel mod Dreamer did once with Accordeon's, various and much details along
the song, i bet most others skipped this song after the first few patterns since the start
is a bit doubtfull but as the song continues it is ONLY getting better. Definately worth
to completely listen to! "Steamed Bollocks" (steamed.it) the followupper runs
pretty good, good industrial songs are rare, this one will stay in my collection.
"Blue Injection 5" (inj.xm) one definition for it "Organical
relaxation". "At the end of the Pier" (b&a-pier.it), hmmz i know this
kind of song in an environment like "Zouteloos achtergrond melodietje van Koos
Korswagen van Koos Korswagen Theaterproducties BV" from Ome Henk, guess you have to
be Dutch AND know Ome Henk to understand such humor :) A rare entry in this style in the
world of tracking, i like it. Global notice about chordsamples and various songs using
them: The thing i noticed was (Yannis' choice of chordscheme which did not seem a wise one
to me) everyone using the chords were creating a bit of the same song with it, makes a
compo less intresting to judge. Never insert chords again!
YanniS' entry was my favourite, it had some
good leads, nice (if generic) chord progressions and was quite well tracked. The only
thing I really hated was the fade-out ending. Lepra's entry came a close second, it had
better drums and also some nice leads, but I didn't like the chords as much.
My 1st-ranked tune, "Kaputnik" by
Paso, won because of the following: - I really enjoy the 1st pattern :) and the tune
develops along very interesting and natural lines.. there's some good percussion in there,
and the bass is good. The leads are very jazzy and stylish.. an oriental flavour found
there among the funk.. it's unusual, and it works good in this tune as well.
I liked both Lepra's tune, but I liked
Ciupman's _Arrival_ better for one simple reason -- in fact, I liked all the selections I
picked for that same reason. Because I have no musical talent whatsoever. Since I write
worth crap, why should my vote count for beans amongst the tallyings of a much more
superior audience? As Mickrip says, "Poor trackers usually choose poor songs." I
voted for the music I liked. The music that, when I listened to it, made me say,
"hey, I enjoy this... this sounds good." If my vote is to be ridiculed because
it doesn't coincide with the majority, then Damn the Man. I went through the effort to
create my own music, and enter it; therefore I am able to put just as much effort into
giving an unbiased opinion of who I think did a good job.
It was great, i loved it. Little PM at the
start but the rest was amazing ;) It was techno, and the best of all in the compo. All the
parts where right and all fit together :)
yannis's tune was ranked by me number one,
because damn, that chorus (patterns 12-15) is so awesome :).. well.. obviously, there were
other reasons besides the chorus. the tune has excellent structure, doesn't get boring,
has excellent melodies, excellent basslines, excellent everything. it sounds great on my
soundcard (not muddy, etc, good mixing), and the second part of the song is kickass, too.
brilliant work, yannis ;)
He's simply the one who got the most groove to
it. Like MickRips TWL in gc1 you get that fealing that this is good music. It shouldn't
really be about wich song is the most advanced how many effects that has used, alltough
Caramel is very good in handling effects. At the bottom line its all about listening and
this song just stuck to my head at once. I dunno what else to say.
Well in my opinion the best tune of the pack
was Yannis's entry followed closely by Vv's. I thought Yannis Edged Vv out with an
intresting track which had a nice chord progresion and a well laid out stucture. However
the expertly tracked melodic lead really was the highlight of Yannis's track. Vv's Sine
orchestra was quite good he did a hell of a lot with alot less. Although perhaps I'm
biased as I really was a Disney kid. ;)
"At The End of The Pier" is a really
good work, especially in the melodic way. This song has original sound, very catchy and
nice melodies, decent chords and good tracking. I was really surprised, that someone is
still able to write this style. Yannis's song is a LOT better than the last one in GC2,
has also funny melodies and good progressions. But I put the "At the ..." song
on the first place, because it is the most original song in this pack. Yes, there are some
"VERY" original "works", but hey You know what I mean. They are shits.
:) Mick's tune is a bit strange and is missing something really to say. I think, Mick was
in hurry while working on this song. My 10th place is for the VERY interresting tune,
which has only one sample, BASS sample changed to a chippy one. Cool idea, what do You
think, Yannis? :) Too bad that the song becomes sick after the order 17. So that's all for
now. The originality wins and lameness looses. BELGARION. I don't know what to say about
his "tune". Maybe he could be better in GFX, who knows :) Just one thing. How
can someone enter this compo with his VERY first tune? I know everyone has to start
somewhere, but I doubt this kompo was realized as a #newbie compo. Hmm, PLEASE try to
think about it a bit. Still, Mick is doing an incredible job with this compo.
Caramel make simply but good work in his mod.
I love all parts of his song. It's just little too short and have little poor sounding,
but i don't very mind. It's best tune in this compo in my vision.
Well, Xhale's track was more my style so I
really enjoyed the variation... Yanniz was really well made as usual. Mickz track was cool
but weak. Doggy was bad wrt the rest I feel. Ballis and argh's tune had a unique sound
compared to the rest, just stood out from the crowd of similar sounding pieces. Smooth. A
lot of the tunes were badly Eq'd and had crazy panning that was hard to listen to. Also
most tunes were very brash, where this one was calm.
"It was a very good compo (IMHO) and it
was very difficult for me to make a ranking by the 4th place. I ranked Yannis Spectral
Analysis first because it was a very well tracked mod, and with a good groove. (especially
in the end) I really loved Vv's entry, (I love Sids) but very few things had me to make
rank it second. (just very few details, but Yannis one was so perfect that I couldn't rank
Vv's one first) I also enjoyed Steamed Bollocks by Spectryl&Husanak for it's unique
sound, really 'refreshing'. I must say that this time all the gc3 entries (except some
that I won't name) were good so I thanks all of you for your music."
I voted this music for number one because the
music is creating a sort of ambient, that is not often found in today´s tracker music.
So, the composers did their best to keep this atmosphere through the whole tune and
that´s why I liked it most. Beside this, the music is quite original and makes me wanna
go surfing (Really.), because Pier -> Harbour -> Sea -> waves -> Surfing, so
it reminds me on my second hobby among tracking. Blah.
It was a great industrial tune. Original usage
of samples. Something different instead of the usual compostyle. nice beat. The rest of
the tunes were cute, and vote-for-me oriented.. This tune was not made to please the
delicate listener.. it had more artistic credibility :) and was more honest.. or atleast
it seems that way to me. peace.
Top3 - smeg-ove.it,ybgc03.it,p-kaput.it I
could NOT stop listening to smeg's song. It was pretty hypnotic. I only found a couple of
faults in it, such as a slight dissonance partway through, but that didn't detract too
much. I didn't place Mick's in the top 3 because it just seemed a bit forced, and not up
to the quality of most of his other songs. I once again found it hardest to pick 10th
place, as I had about five songs I liked left to place and only two places left to give.
I voted kaput 1st because when I first heard
it i said "Ah! finally!". It has some really cool leads, background, feel and
whatever (but the leads certainly make the difference) and shortly thats about it.
note:After I heard vv's tune I hesitated which of them should be first but in the end I
settled for the kaput anyway coz I liked it better and voted vv second. I voted for him
second not because of the amazing fact that he only used 1 300b sample, but because i
thought it was a good song. If I let the fact that it was just one synth sample tune I
would have given it first because its so fucken amazing. I get the feeling that vv is
making us (gc entrants) look pretty dumb, making a better tune than most of us with only
one shitty sample. fuck :) btw: give credit to jeffry! i bet he couldn't have done it in
fast tracker :)
Winner=Husanuk The first inpression of this
tune was that it totally freaked out anything about composing music, but then after some
careful listening i found some innoative parts of those strange melodies... i think you're
a really good tracker, and i'm looking forward to more tunes like this. great work! :)
B&APier rocked! I loved it! It had all of
the qualities of a good song, and was really enjoyable too. Smeg's was awesome, but didn't
sound as good as it could have in a few places, so I gave it second instead of first.
Paso's was cool too, so I gave it third. It was strange when I listened to it through
twice. VV's song was funny... cool remix of Disney music :)
Winner=Spec+HusanAk Brilliant tune with
excellent beats. The noises are cool and fit perfectly. I liked one of the other songs
just as much, but the originality made me pick this one.
[CiupMan] - i digged a lot wayfinder´s tune,
i a little bit sick of all those cheezy tunes around here.... arg i hate cheeze.. ehe,
Xcite is the stuff.... coolio... , man you could have lowered a little bit the beat
volume, hum 2 hours panning, it was worth it :)...(100 words already?? oh, what the heck!)
Yannis Brown's tune was creative, focused, and
engaging. I've heard it about twenty times now. Great tune. I love the part right before
the end. My choice for first place was _very_ close between "Train of Thought"
and "At the end of the Pier". "Survival" was also right up there. I
selected "Train of Thought" first place because it had a pretty nifty and unique
introduction sequence. The rest of the tune is equally well done, having nice panning and
solid structure. I was also impressed with the buildup near the end that smoothly leads to
a fitting end to the song. Its hard to say this song is 'better' than my number two pick,
as they are both good in my opinion, I just happen to personally favor "Train of
Thought" slightly. :)
Ballistique and Argh get my #1 vote because
their tune was, in my opinion, one of the most original songs in the pack. After listening
to tune after tune of sinercrud and hardcore crapno (slowly losing faith in the scene as i
go along), 'At the end of the pier' refreshed my expectations as to what could be
accomplished within a tracking compo. The style was simplistic, yet full of that damn-
i-really-miss-home kind of feeling. *sniff*. :)
