GroovyCompo #8 Results
This groovy comp was hindered by Groove.org being down, so everything had to be
done through email. Sorry to those who I don't have on the mailing list, and who did
upload entries in time to the Ftp site. Because I had no access to the ftp site after it
went down, those entries were lost :(. Anyway, some excellent entries this time round.
Sorry about the delay releasing the results, I've been swamped with problems the last
week, including getting my new PC up and running, software not working, everyday life
problems.

Yendi.xm - Radix (No Vote)
Comments

YENDI.XM
- radix's tune has the best mixing out of all tunes.. the sample he uses for the
chords is perfect for the song since it adds a sort of 'airyness' to the whole mix, adding
a brigher feel. the percussion fits well because he did not use the more sustaining
percussions, which would definately screw with the mixing in the song. the bassline is a
good old traditional radix bassline (tm) :).. very good. the beginning melody instrument
is excellent since having low harmonics doesn't mess much with the chord samples.. all the
melodies are wellpicked out and the whole structure of this song is great.. whatever that
synth-guitarish sample is, it is used great with the second melody that kicks in after
awhile. the second half of the song, where it changes it nice, although i'm not quite sure
about the key change thrown in there. it makes for a nice ending, with the arpeggiated
beepy thing and all. great song, radix :)
- displays what I feel are the fundamentals of tracking.. ie, creative use of
samples.. (which was a ust with this sample pack), A flowing, ear-catching melody, a
respectable chord progression, but all in all, a well-rounded,
well-tracked/composed/arranged tune. =)
- radix shines in this familiar package of neo-doskpop, with the lizardking-esque
lead phrasing that we've all come to expect from skilled trackers such as he. this song
brings to mind the best of the
- best from years past when all there was was 8 channels, some sharp sounding
samps, and a bag of tricks. the melody in this song is great, plus the progressions are
nearly flawless. the only problem i have with the tune is the ending sounded uninspired,
no doubt due to how easy it is to run out of time in these silly compos.
- When I was scrolling through the entries after downloading the votepack, I
thought: Hmm, no Protocol, no Firelight, no really outstanding songs. Maybe I'll win this
compo? But when I started playing YENDI.XM, my hope vanished. The quality of this entry
amazes me, and I just love the laidback feeling it gives. Normally I would rather go for a
faster song, but YENDI.XM definately deserves 1st place. PS: I've heard some rumours
telling that Radix downloaded the sample pack only a few hours before deadline. If that's
true, that guy must rock even more...
0BRNBOMB.IT
- Nice atmosphere out of a really bad samplepack. The tune has nice melody, good
progression, good technique, fat sounding ambience.. it seems like the music in a dream..
coming from somewhere distant. Varriety in musical themes makes the tune interesting.
Nicely tracked. You can have it playing in the background and it won't bore you a bit.
Good job.
- I really enjoyed when I listened the tune. That wasn´t waste of my time like of
my time like some other tunes. It started great with the flute and strings. Samples were
bad but in this case they were perfect. The sample which was added heard nice, because the
octaves changed all the time. The end could be better. I had no problems when I chose the
winner.
TS-SINBD.IT
- was numero uno 4 me cause it had the best use of sounds from the GC08 crappy
samplepack. Basically it. Also giving the name Sinbad was a nice touch...made me think of
pirates...I like pirates. Hmmmmm...
- The tune was catchy - i found myself humming it at work. I don't feel that any of
the songs in this compo had especially good endings, but the ending of this song was
adequate. I felt that the tune had influences in Leftfield and Orbital (the latter
predominantly when the arpeggio bit came in pattern 41) - both acts which i respect.
HUHNER.IT
- Well this gc was almost a dead heat between Radix and Beek. However having to
choose I placed beek ahead of Radix for the complexity of his composition. I must say
Radix's tune was infectius, I had a hard time sleeping the last few nights, that melody
just wouldn't leave me alone. Beek however put together a superior tune in terms of
technique. Beek used the samples to there fullest effect, editing them very well. The
tracking in his lead was particularily good. Beeks bass line is definatly a 'how too',
anyone having trouble writing quality bass lines should study huhner.
- Well, first off, I would like to put foward the idea that all future sample packs
include a piano of some description. I also think the idea of good quality samples is the
way to go. All of the songs included were let down by poor samples, particually the
percussion. Anyway, this was a very interesting votepack. While none of the songs were
exceptional, the average quality was very high, making the job of ranking them difficult.
However, there must be a winner, and, to my ear anyway, HUHNER.IT was the one. It flowed
well, and was generally of the level of goodness that I aspire to. The middle part of the
song was great, very well written. Due to my lack of experience though, I cannot provide a
very good rundown on all the good parts, as I'm not sure as to what they were :) Anyway, a
good song, very well done.

SSMLAOTM.IT
- i'm glad my car doesn't sound like this! :) the premise is OK just try to take it
easy on the sounds you try to combine. experiment more with how different things sound
together, and if it's industrialesque you're shooting for, you've got to control the
mixing a bit better. most of all, KEEP TRYING!
SMEG_GC8.IT
- Last place was hard to pick, as there was a lot of songs at the same level.
However, there must also be a looser, so consolations to SMEG_GC8.IT. Your song shows much
improvment over earlier works, and a lot of promise. I liked the clangy industrial feel,
but in that genre, SSMLATOM.IT was of a generally higher quality. However, you have all
the right things to go on in the scene, so don't dispere, all is not lost. Good luck in to
you in the future.-
- i wanted to place this higher because of its luscious, quirky time signature, but
other tunes pipped it in terms of final song quality
HUS-LAT.IT
- kinda boring... i would not have realised there were quite so many patterns in
this tune... i reckoned maybe four or five... not enough changes... i placed JAWSGC8.IT
*ABOVE* this tune, because at least that one changed key!
General Comments:
YENDI..IT
- professional sounding but it was let down by one minor detail, in my mind: the
way the opening strings swept across the stereo field all in a line... a little
disorientating ... having each violin sweeping out of phase would've been perhaps better,
or maybe having each violin in a slightly different stereo position (whilst keeping the
panning)
BART-VAL.IT
- fifth place at least? you must be joking. I found it never changed pace... the
whole tune was based around the same ping-ponging stereo echoing effect which tires after
few patterns (and a few songs)... i liked the deep throat bass of the monster pulse
though... but the piano melody was too rigid 4/4... it was like bang bang bang bang.... i
wanted something more like bang bang be-dum dum banga bang... you know?
